CHAPTER TEN

FOR THE NEXT FOUR DAYS Wesley successfully avoided Louise. He jogged along the shore of Currituck Sound instead of the town square track even though the uneven, sandy terrain was not kind to the soles of his feet. He stayed away from the Kettle except for breakfast on Monday morning, when Bobbi Lee acted as if taking his order was as unpleasant as getting a root canal.

“You won’t see her here this morning,” Bobbi Lee had smartly informed him.

Of course he pretended he had no idea what she was talking about. “Won’t see who?” he’d asked.

“Don’t play ignorant with me, Wes Fletcher,” she’d snapped at him. “I remember your high school grade point average.” And then she’d smugly told him that Louise was in Morgan City conferring with her legal team, which included one Lawrence Aaronson. Wes had laughed at the whole idea. He was quite certain that Louise didn’t need a team of any sort nor any help beyond her sponsorship.

During his infrequent trips to town, Wes realized something else as well. The ladies of Bayberry Cove had obviously heard who was acting as counsel for the factory. The cold shoulder he’d received from Bobbi Lee was pretty much the same reaction he got from most of the women in his hometown. People who normally waved and smiled at him from passing automobiles now pretended they didn’t see him. Even the checker at the supermarket swept his purchases over the scanning window without so much as a “How are you today?”

He found out that circumstances weren’t much better for his father. By Wednesday night, when the isolation of Buttercup Cottage was making him stir-crazy, Wes accepted an invitation to eat with his dad at a chain restaurant on the freeway a few miles from town. Besides questioning Wes about what he knew of the secret meeting on Saturday morning, Haywood complained that his relationship with Kate had turned as cold as a winter frost.

“That lady attorney is turning my life upside down,” he grumbled. “So what has she got on us, son?”

“I don’t know, Dad. Maybe you should tell me.”

Haywood covered a belch with his napkin and dipped his twelfth chicken wing in spicy barbecue sauce. “Nothing. She’s got nothing. Justin Beauclaire tells me we’re clean as a scrubbed blackboard.”

“That’s not the impression I get from half the women in town. I feel like my female neighbors have suddenly taken sides and I’ve assumed the identity of a Yankee.”

Haywood leaned over the table and spoke in a whisper. “Do you think she’s filed any complaints with the EEOC?”

Wes took a long swallow of soda. “Well, Dad, she said she would, and I don’t think she’s the type to make idle threats. She’s not afraid of any of you boys, and she’s set herself up with Aaronson. So, yes, I’d say she probably has, or will as soon as she gets enough documentation.”

“This is just what I need to hear with Kate treating me like a flea off a dog’s hiney.
